Years of Work Experience, How to Compute?

One of the eligibility factors for the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) in Canada 2014 is the Work Experience.  For some, it is a little bit confusing on how to define the number of years of work experience.

This is the frequently asked questions from my email Subscribers:

"What are the occupations that I should include in my years of work experience?"

What Are the Skill Levels
In the application requirements, it states that your work experience for the past ten years should be in the Skill Type 0 , Skill Level A or B of the NOC 2011 list.

Here are the definition of each skills:

  • Skill Type 0 - These are from the Management Occupations and starts with a code number "0"
  • Skill Level A - Occupations that usually require university educations.
  • Skills Level B -  These are the occupations that usually requires college education or apprenticeship training.

Don't worry, I have found an easy resource for you to verify your work experience.  It is the National Occupational Classification Matrix 2011.

This will be your guide to know whether your previous occupation can be included in the years of your work experience. Click the photo...

How To Compare Your Occupation with the NOC 2011?
This time, you've probably determined the NOC Code of your occupations that was at the NOC Matrix 2011.

Now, the next thing you do is to use that NOC code and verify if the main duties or also called as the Job Description (JD) at the NOC 2011 is the same with that of your current or previous occupations.

You can click on this link, NOC Quick Search, to visit the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada website.

At the bottom-left part of the site, you can find the Quick Search box.  Please see the reference photo below.

Source: Human Resources and Skills Development Canada

Key in the NOC code and it will redirect to the list of the main duties of that particular code.

Example: I am an Engineer. If I had experienced working as a Librarian for a year, for the past 10 years of my working career, then I can include 1 year for my Work Experience because this job is at the Skill Level A, according to the NOC Matrix 2011.
The NOC code of Librarian is 5111.  I keyed in 5111 at the Quick Search box and it showed this.

Then I need to provide the Certificate of Employment (COE), with the same main duties or JD, from my employer, as a proof of my work experience.
Since Librarians are not included in the 50 eligible occupations list, I cannot make it as my Primary eligible occupation.  It will just be supplementary for my years of Work Experience.
Years of Work Experience Computation?
Provided that all occupations had their corresponding COEs. You can list and compute for the number of years of work experience like this.

Primary Occupation:
NOC 2172 Data Base Analyst  - 2 years (included in 50 eligible occupations list)

NOC 2234 (skill level B) Construction Estimator - 11 months (Not included in the computation)
NOC 2234 (skill level B) Assistant Estimator - 4 years
NOC 7251 (skill level B) Plumber - 2 years
NOC 5111 (skill Level A) Librarian - 1 year
NOC 9526 (skill Level C) Mechanical Assembler - 2 years  (Not included in the computation)

Total Work Experience : 9 years

Hi Ben Thanks for the informative chart! Can I double confirm with you if elementary school teachers will be considered as part of the work experience?

Ben Alagnam said...

Hi gooble, my wife is an elementary school teacher too..:D

Your code is 4032 (skill level A) and it's in the NOC and can be included in your work experience. Take a look at the main duties...

Elementary School and Kindergarten Teachers

Gobbledegook said...

Gee. thanks Ben, was rather worried as it wasn't included in your links previously. Am relieved now.

MOE does not provide job descriptions for primary school teachers, neither are the JD specified in the recruitment drive or online website. I have attached a corresponding email with MOE with the HR officer explaining that MOE does not provide a JD for MOE teachers, and explained in a letter with regards to the situation. However, the COE I received from MOE meets all the other requirements. Do you think it will suffice?

hi ben,

Is occupation must be the same with job position?
Im CE but my post on my COE are Assistant Resident Engr., Project Engineer, etc.
Will it be a problem later on? Or if the duties are matching the occupation Civil Engineer under NOC list it is ok?..

Also, for your current job, what end date did you put if you are still currently working? should I write the word present on the YYYY-MM box?

Ben Alagnam said...

Hi Gobble, since it's a letter from the MOE, and I assume that this is a strong evidence, this will suffice as based on the Note from the Document Checklist (IMM5612), 4th paragraph.

Ben Alagnam said...

Occupation title doesn't matter, but the Job Description does.

If you're a CE (NOC 2131), verify if the Job Description (JD) of this occupation is the same with the job descriptions of your Asst Resident Engr., Proj Engr, etc...if they are the same, then you can specify CE (NOC 2131) as your Primary Occupation in your application. If this is not clear enough, inform me so I can make a dedicated post about it here.

It's the day when you print the document.. (ex: Jan 2011 - July 2014), if you plan to print it today.

From To Occupation NOC Years of Experience Main Duties

I have one question though in counting work experience..

Example:
Work Experience 1: 1year and 6 months
Work Experience 2: 3 months
Work Experience 3: 1 yrs and 3 months

Is my total work experience = 3 years?

Or I shouldn't count the months = 2 years

Hi Dennis,

Please read my blog post about it here...I explained it there more clearly, so it's a bit long.. :D

Ben Alagnam said...

Hi Sajib,
0911 is for manufacturing Managers, please check the main duties of that NOC and compare it with yours. If it's the same, then it should be ok.

Since you are using the same NOC since the start of your career. You can just use the FORMAT 1. We have the same structure, I only used format 1. Hope this helps.

Tip: Don't put present...key in the date of printing/submission of your full application instead.

Hi Ben,
In the application document checklist, I have seen I need to show some document to show relationship with spouse like life insurance ..
I don't have any thing except marriage certificate.

And do I need to make notary of marriage/birth certificates as I will be sending a copy(not original) to them.?

thanks

Ben Alagnam said...

You can choose Worker.

Ben Alagnam said...

You can send the photocopy of your marriage certificate to establish the relationship. If your certificate is not written in English, you need to notarize, otherwise, just a photocopy will do.

Hi! I'm confused. I have 6 yrs and 1 month work experience as a staff nurse. How should this be computed? Do months no longer computed? Is the computation cumulative?

Example:
*Company A 3 months (48hrs./ week)
Company B 2 years and 10 months (48hrs./week)
Company C 1 year (48hrs./week)
Company D 2 years (48hrs./week)

Hi Sir Ben,

Hoping this thread is still active and you'll be able to see it. I wanted to ask since I've already been to 5 different companies, but three of them did not reach 1 year.

Experience:
Company A - 3 years
Company B - 5 months
Company C - 1 year and 2 months
Company D - 2 months
Company E - 3 months

All under same NOC. Can I include Companies, B , D and E in my work experience?
Hoping for your response. Thank you.

Hi, here's what I got from the Comprehensive Scoring for your reference.

Skilled work experience
Your work experience must be:
-in the same type of job as your primary NOC
-within the last 10 years
-paid work (volunteer work, unpaid internships don’t count) at skill --type 0, or skill levels A or B of the 2016 National Occupational Classification (NOC)
-at least 1 year (1,560 hours total / 30 hours per week), continuous:
-full-time at 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
-equal amount in part-time: 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)
-full-time at more than 1 job: 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)

You must show that you did the duties set out in the occupational description in the NOC. This includes most of the main duties listed.

If you can’t show that your work experience meets the description in the NOC, you aren’t eligible under this program.

Hi Sir,

Thank you for your reply. Yes they are all under same NOC and all are Full-time (working 8 hrs / day). I am just worried that they may not recognize my 3 companies that are less than a year since they said at least 1 year.
